About M.A.K.E. Initiative

Our Story

M.A.K.E. Initiative Foundation is a nonprofit organization founded on the belief that the strongest work is work that leaves something behind: greater access, greater knowledge, greater capacity, and stronger partnerships.

M.A.K.E. Initiative Foundation is built around action and execution. Healthcare is an important part of our Foundation, but meaningful change goes beyond immediate intervention. Education and training can build knowledge and capacity. Partnerships can extend what is possible. Resources, infrastructure and community support can help strengthen the environments in which people live and work.

Our work may take different forms, but the purpose remains the same: to take on work that matters and make it impactful.

Our first initiative is only the beginning.

We don’t do this work alone. Donors, volunteers, professionals, businesses and partners each contribute something that can help make an initiative possible.

Take the initiative. M.A.K.E. it possible.

IMPACT / APPROACH

Turning Care Into
Long-Term Change

The goal isn’t simply to provide care today. It’s to help create the condition for better care tomorrow.

We support initiatives that strengthen the people, systems and resources already within a community, so that the impact of an intervention can continue long after we leave.

Because the strongest measure of our work isn’t how much we bring with us. It’s what remains when we’re gone.

People Behind The Experience

M.A.K.E. Initiative
Dr. Kim Le MD, MPH, FRCSC
Dr. Le’s interest in developing countries began in the Dominican Republic where she researched mosquito-transmitted infectious diseases as an undergraduate biology student of Cornell University. Her passion for global health further blossomed during her internship with the World Health Organization in China where she studied pandemic preparedness during the SARS epidemic. Equipped with a Master in Public Health from Yale, Medical Doctorate from the University of Toronto, and Ophthalmology Residency from McGill, Dr. Le traveled the world as a healthcare volunteer.

To gain a broad outlook on international development, she joined a variety of organizations from community grass roots to international nonprofits. Her participation in vision screening camps in India, healthcare surveys in rural El Salvadore, ocular surgery skills transfer in Vietnam, and free cataract surgery in Grenada, cemented her lifetime dedication to expanding quality healthcare in resource-poor settings.

Dr. Le is a Comprehensive Ophthalmologist and Refractive Cataract Surgeon in Canada. She has additional expertise in Glaucoma, Retina and Dry Eye Disease. As Medical Director, Dr. Le provides clinical leadership and perspective to M.A.K.E. initiatives focused on building healthcare capacity in underserved areas, advancing surgical education, and supporting sustainable impact in the communities we serve using best practices.
